B99 Questions And Answers

1. What was the task you were asked to complete?

The task I was ask was to re-create the Brooklyn 99 intro with other students in my class. We had to record it
and then edit in premier pro. The job was to make it as similar to the actually thing as possible.

2. How successful were you at completing this task?

I think I was pretty successful at completing the task, the main advantage I had was that I  already had
experience with premier pro and editing as I did it all last year, this meant that I finished it a lot quicker
and could use the skills I learnt last year to make it stand out from others.

3. What skills did you have to use to complete this task?

The main skills we had to use in this task would be; the knowledge of how to use a camera correctly and make sure everything thing is in focus and how to then use premier pro to edit the clips. As I did this course already last year and two other people in my group as well we were able to set up and record everything a lot quicker and we could use the skills we learnt last year in this unit.

4.In what ways were your skillset challenged during this project?

The way that my skills were challenged during this project were probably when we had to mask around the colour when doing the 'colour matte' main reason being as I have never done it before so it was something new to learn and also because it there was a lot of bend and strange curves to do when masking around a human being that is standing in a strange stance. Another way that my skills were challenged is remember all the key things I have learnt last year and implementing them in this unit after a massive summer break.

5. If you were to carry out the production again, what changes would you make?

If I was to carry out the production again the one thing I would change that we didn't do this time was that I would record clips at least three times just to be safe that they are all in focus and that focus.

6.If you were to carry out post-production again, what changes would you make?

If I was to carry out the post-production again the thing I would change in it is the way I edited the whole clip,
I would make sure my masking is a lot more accurate and looks more realistic, I would also add more effects to make it a lot more like the actual thing and not just stick to the basic.I would also change the animation that I used for the bar and the character name.

7. How did you perform working in a group?

I think that I preformed well in a group and I think the whole group performed well together as we got the work
I think that I preformed well in a group and I think the whole group preformed well working together as we go the work done pretty quickly without any major issues that would set us back to the beginning. We finished all the recordings in one lessons even though we only recorded it once which resulted in some clips not looking the best and if we recorded it at least three times we could of got a lot better outcome.

8. How did you perform working independently?
I think I preformed better independently than in a group. I got the work finished a lot quicker as I had no distractions so I could just sit down do the work and focus on it and not worry about any distractions around me. I think if it was a group work to edit I think I wouldn't of finished as quick and it outcome of my work maybe wouldn't of been as good as it came out working independently.

9. What aspect of the project did you enjoy the most?

The aspect that I enjoyed the most from the project would have to be the editing part as I could put everything I learnt last year and use it in this project to make it as close to the actual thing as possible, and I am happy with the outcome but it could of come out a lot better if I put in a little more effort and time into it.

10. How could you apply the skills you learned in this project to future projects?

The way I could apply the skills that I learnt from this project in future projects would be
the masking skill as that is a pretty good skill to have if you want to mask a character. That would
be the only major skill I learnt in this project that I would use in future projects.

Photography Basic Analysis

NYC7373.jpg

This is a photo by a street photographer called Bruce Gilden. The one thing that I like in this image is the framing as the main thing that catches our eye is the man laying on the floor with his head in his hands. The thing I do not like about it would be Mise En Scene as it's pretty basic and there isn't a lot of props or costumes in the image, all the costumes are the same. Another thing I like about this image would be the angle it was taken from, taken from a really low angle like the man on the floor gives us a small feeling of what it's like to be in the mans shoes. Another thing I don't like about the image is the context as there isn't one behind this image.Battery Park Night

This is an image by a landscape photographer called Randy Scott-Slavin. The main thing I like about image is how it has been edited, it has been edited in a very unique way. All of Slavin's work are edited the same way making them really unique. I also like the lighting in the image and location. The one thing that I don't like about the image is the way that it has been edited makes the framing a minus in this image as it makes us focus on the "whole" in the image and that is the first thing that catches our eye first.

This is a photograph taken by a nature photographer called Rinko Kawauchi. The main thing I like about this image would have to be the framing, the framing makes you focus on the middle of the image staring down. Another thing that I really like about the image is the lighting on it, it has a small blue tint on it to add a bit of effect and brighten up the image and give it that bit more life as well. The only thing that isn't good in this photograph would be the Mise En Scene, everything else in this photograph would be spot on.

Photography Advanced Analysis

The thing I like about this image and catches my eye is the lighting and the fog effect on it. It creates a kind of suspense feeling on it. The thing that catches my eye is the lady that seems to be staring at the window as if she is trying to remember how the town was before.

Gregory Crewdson, ‘Untitled’, 2003, GagosianGregory Crewdson

Untitled, 2003

This image was taken in a suburban area in America in 2003. The purpose of the image is to represent the lady as if she is looking back at how the town used to be. You can get this feeling from the foggy background and the lady looking at the house window which seems to be converted into a shop.

The lighting in the image comes from lights inside of shops and natural lighting. The lighting seems to be around the lady on the zebra crossing implying she is the key point of the image, and that is the first thing our eyes focus on when we look at the photo.

Camera Settings & Photos

1.    Focal length

What are the focal length options?

The options of focal length that you get are 18, 24, 35, 55, 85, 105, 135, 200 and 300. They are all measured in MM (Millimetres)

What different effects can you create?
The effects you can create with the focal length  is that if there is an object or a person between the zooms the background might be blurry or clear.
Can you think of a narrative scenario where you might choose a short vs a long one?

The narrative scenario for a short would be an establishing shot to show everything, whereas a scenario of a long one would be show only an object or a character in detail.

2.    White balance
How do you change the white balance?

To change the white balance on a camera you have to go into the settings and change it there. You will have several options to pick from and you can choose each one and see what the different effect is.
Why would you?

You would do this to create a mood in a film for example if you are recording a horror you would make the white balance more blueish/ darkish colour to fit the tone.

3.        Aperture
What are the options?

The options depend on the camera and lens you are using, but they can go as low as f/1.0 and as high as f/32.0
How do you reach them?

To reach the it you need to go into your settings where you can change the aperture, focal length and all the other things. You would then have to use the right setting judging by the area you are in, the darker the area you are in the more light you need so the lower the aperture as the lower the aperture the more light the camera lets in.
Why would you choose one of the other?

The reason you would chose one of them is if you are in a dark place and you want to make it brighter you would lower the aperture, you would also use it if you are in a bright spot and don't to make it too bright you would turn it down.

4.    Shutter speed
What shutter speeds are there? Which is best for showing the speed of an object?

The shutter speeds that you can choose from are  1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8. Each time they are doubling. If you are trying to show speed you could even set it to a lower setting which will might be blurry which can represent movement or have it at a higher setting which will freeze the object whilst in the movement.
Which is best for capturing a fast moving object in perfect stillness?

The best setting to capture a fast moving object in perfect stillness would be the highest shutter speed possible in the camera settings, the reason for that is the faster the shutter speed the less light that will come in and the quicker the image will be taken meaning it will take it at the perfect moment and in perfect stillness without any blur in the image. An example of capturing fast moving objects in perfect stillness would be sport where the athlete is performing and the photographers are trying to capture a unique moment and need to take the picture as quick as possible.

5.    ISO
Which is best for blowing the image up very large?

The best setting for blowing up your image large would be 100ASA as that will not make your image too bright and will keep the detail and it will also not make your image grainy.
100ASA
400ASA
3200ASA
Which is best for very low light?

The best ASA for low light where you do not care about the detail of the image would be 3200ASA but it can make the image really grainy, and might not be usable.
100ASA
400ASA
3200ASA
Which is best for very low light where the detail of the image is important, and you want to blow it up large?

The best setting for very low light where you want the detail of the image would be 400ASA as that wouldn't make the image too bright and wouldn't make it grainy and it will still have detail. 100ASA also wouldn't be the best option as that will blow up your image but you will barley see anything as it will be too dark.

La Haine Analysis

The effectiveness of using the rule of third in this scene is that it not only shows us the character's emotions but also shows us a bit about him as we can see the background and it shows us what he is into. In the framing we see the character's facial expression his actions of smoking and a bit about the character himself. From the framing we can gather that the character is an athletic person and his passion seems to be boxing.

The Mise en scene of this shot shows us the characters standing in a rural area giving us an impression they come from a poor background, we can also get this impression from the clothes they are wearing as they are wearing cheap fashionable clothing. These two points reinforce the idea of the characters coming from a poor background. The graffiti on the wall shows that the characters are trying to express themselves and this is the only way they can do it as they can't move out or anything.

The way the camera movement affects the audience's emotional response is that it shows us that everything in the area is the same, all the buildings look the same, and making it a high angle from above shows that the people are not important, as there will be loads of them in the area. The camera movement flying off into the distance creates the impression that the characters might want to move out of the area but are unable to do so because of their background and where they come from.
La Haine Storyboard

La Haine re-shoot  Side by Side video

1. Which were your best shots

I think our best shots from the whole scene was the start the conversation between
Hubert and another character where they later on walk away from each other.

 2. Which shots were hardest to shoot

The hardest shots to shoot were either the running part of the final stand off where it
zoomed into one of the actors and they had to have a serious and worried facial expression.
The part that was hard about the running was that we need to record the feet and the character's
face so we had to try and make it work.

 3. Which shots look most like the original

The shot that are most like the original would have to be the start where they are having a conversation
purely because it was probably the easiest to shoot.

4. What new equipment did you use and how could you use it again in future projects?

The newest piece of equipment we used was a g bracket that we used to record the running part. We would use the g bracket again if we have any tracking shot to of a character running or even walking or maybe biking. That was the only new piece of equipment we used in this project.

5. What would you have done if you were to shoot this scene again?

I think the main thing we would try and do is try to act better and re-shoot a lot of the clips again to make sure they are in focus, make sure they look as close to the original as possible and make sure we are happy with how it looks ourselves so later on we have a few clips to pick from and not worry if one is out of focus or something.

Short film:

Fail edit 1:

Scenario 1 (Clones):

Scenario 2 (FKA Twigs) :

Questions:

questions
What genre did you decide to make the scene? (Eg dramatic, romcom etc)

The genre we decided to make the scene was horror.

Why did you decide on the scenario you chose?

We decided on this scenario because we found that we could change the script around a bit and make it our own, which gave a bit of a challenge.

Were there any issues with the group?

The only issue that was within the group was keeping track of time and making sure we have enough time for everything and that we give ourselves enough time to do all tasks as well.

Would you work with the same people again (any concerns about specific people tell me in class not on the blog!)?

Yes, despite distractions at time I think we all worked well together and would work well in the future.

Did you know exactly what your role was?

Yes.

What was it?

My role for two of the scenarios was cinematographer. For one of the scenarios I was director.

Did you perform your role alright? (Were you pleased/were there issues?)

I think I preformed to the best of my ability in my role and I was pleased with the outcome at the end.

How was the group’s timekeeping?

Time keeping was one thing that we struggled with at the start but it got a lot better towards the end.

Who was in charge of this?

I was in charge of time keeping for the group

Who did what in the group?

FKA Twigs (Fail)
Seb - Director
Thomas - Sound
Aysun - Sound
Rory - Actor
Peter - Actor
Jakub - Cinematographer
Rocco - Camera operator

Rocco - Director

Who was the best in their role?

I think Peter and Rocco were the best at their role because they were really good at acting.

Looking at the final edit, what would you change if you were to shoot again?

I would probably change the location for one of them and not have it in the same location for both of the scenarios.

Was the brief clear (if not, why do you say that)?

Yes the brief was clear we just got confused

Did you run through the performances first (blocking them out, rehearsing)?

No we went straight into filming our scenarios.

Did you meet the brief first time around? If not, what was the feedback?

No we didn't, the first time we got the wrong shot types and we also broke the 180 rule that was the main thing to watch out for when filling these scenarios. After that we didn't do anything wrong and met the brief.

Look carefully at the first three-five cuts you made. Why did you make them then?

Because it was scene after scene, and it was a different shot each time.

Establishing shot, Eye-line match
.
What could happen next in the film?

For the clones scene we could show what happens after the clone runs towards the character and what they do.

In the FKA Twigs the characters could talk more about FKA Twigs and tell each other what they know about it already.
